Moving/Buying Guide
Once you've got your moving date, you'll need to do certain things in a certain order or else you might find yourself in a freezing cold new home, with not enough water to even boil a kettle.
Four weeks before moving
  • Get written quotes from several removal firms. Get references and check the limits of their insurance.
  • If you are not using professional removers, ask friends for help.
  • If you need extra storage space, book it now.
  • Confirm the date of your move.
  • If you are renting, notify your landlord of your moving date.
  • Notify the gas and electricity boards of your new address and arrange to have the meter read.
  • Start getting rid of possessions you no longer need. Decide which items can be taken to a charity shop, sold at a car boot sale, or offered to your friends.
  • Check your home insurance - make sure you have cover from the day you move in and consider increasing or decreasing the amount of cover.
  • If you need new furniture/carpets - order it now and check delivery times.
Two weeks before moving
  • Make a list of everyone who should know about the move. Send out change of address e-cards. (link to ecards)
  • Start packing non-essential items such as books and non-seasonal clothes into boxes. It's a good idea to use a small room for storing your packed boxes.
  • If you have children or pets, arrange for someone to look after them during the move.
  • Notify your milkman and newspaper shop that you will be moving and give them the date you want the service to stop.
  • If you are renting, notify your landlord of your moving date.
  • If you are going to have your home professionally cleaned, arrange it now.
  • De-register from your doctor, dentist and optician if you're moving out of the area.
  • Visit the post office and arrange for your post to be forwarded. (You will be charged a fee for this service).
One weeks before moving
  • Finalise the arrangements with your removal company. Confirm their time of arrival and make sure they have directions to your new address.
  • Start packing your possessions into boxes, making sure that each box is clearly labelled with the room and details of its contents. Don't forget to label all fragile items.
  • Separate all essential documents such as insurance records and keep in a safe place until the day of the move.
  • Service your car and plan your route.
  • Use up frozen foods.
  • Disassemble furniture.
One day before moving
  • Make sure your house is clean.
  • Contact the utility companies and check that the meters will be read.
  • Walk around your home, checking that nothing has been left behind. If you have a garden or loft, check you have packed everything.
  • Do any last minute laundry.
  • Defrost fridge/freezer
  • Get new keys or ensure they'll be available on the day.
  • Keep valuable items such as jewellery on you personally.
  • Set aside your vacuum cleaner and cleaning products for your new house.
Moving day in your old home
  • Strip beds and keep linen ready for the evening.
  • Make sure the removers have your new address and directions.
  • Pack a box with essentials for when you arrive at your new house. An electric kettle, tea, biscuits, milk, mugs and toilet paper are likely to be high on your list. Also make sure you have all the necessary telephone numbers to hand.
  • Check windows and doors are secure and water, gas and electricity are switched off (if necessary).
In your new home
  • It's a good idea to drive ahead of your removers to open the house.
  • Check that all the utilities are working - electricity, immersion, gas etc.
  • Make sure none of your possessions have been damaged in transit.
  • Unpack your survival box.
  • Order a takeway
